Did you know that the 2012 USDA Census of Agriculture identified over 12,000 CSAs in the United States (up from only 906 in 2008!) CSA farms offer a certain number of “shares” to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a “membership” or a “subscription”) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season. It’s a great way for farmers to gauge demand and get payment early in the year to help cash flow, and the customers get fresh, local food all summer. It’s a win-win!
